Five Black Friday Alternatives

Five ways to #BuyLess and Enjoy Your Family More.

One of the most treasured traditions of Christmas is hanging stockings (with care!) to be filled with little gifts on Christmas morning. But leaving nails in the mantle all year is less than appealing. Also, what if you don’t have a mantle? Here are six simple ways to hang your stockings without ruining your home interior with nails and hooks.

For many, Black Friday has lost its sparkle. From the maddening crowds to the terrifying traffic. It’s just not worth it. Many big name stores have decided to close all together to give employees a break before the holiday rush begins. We are thankful for this change in mindset and are eager to have more quality time with loved ones and #BuyLess.

Here are five fun loving alternatives to the Black Friday headache:

Tree Cutting

What better way to ring in the holiday season than to cut down your own special Christmas tree? A quick Google search can locate a tree farm in your area. Even if it is a few hours away, it could be a charming day trip for the family to explore another town and come home with that perfect tree to fill your home with that glorious pine fresh scent. If you do not live near any tree farms, there is sure to be a tree stand in your area. Find the one that appeals most to you and make an afternoon out of it by taking the family out to lunch before the tree picking begins.

Ice Skating

Don’t we all want to pretend we are in A Charlie Brown Christmas ice skating with Snoopy and the gang? Granted, many of us don’t know how to skate, but that is the fun part, simply wobbling about until we get the hang of it. Most cities have an ice skating rink set up for the holidays for all to enjoy. Even in warm weather environments you can find synthetic ice rinks that do the trick. Take a twirl and then recharge with some wassail and gingerbread men for the full holidazzle effect.

Baking Gingerbread Men

Nothing brings Christmas home more than the taste of a delicious gingerbread man. We know you just finished cooking Thanksgiving so make it easy and buy premade gingerbread dough, a multipack of icing and a few cookie cutters and go to town. Decorating the cookies can be a new cherished tradition with kids and adults alike.

Let the creativity run wild and see who can make the most amusing cookie!

Long Weekend Getaways

Worn out from the Thanksgiving feast? Take that Friday for a field trip and head out of town for a few days of R&R. We love how REI is pushing #OptOutside instead of #ShopBlackFriday. Book a little mountain house or even a staycation in your own city. Add a spa day or a peaceful hike and you will be recharged for the hectic holiday rush.

Movie Marathon Day

Sometimes we just need a pajama day, so do it! Prep your family for a movie day and line up what you all can agree on watching. Christmas Classics? The newest Netflix series? Whatever you find, be sure it is something everyone can enjoy together, keeping that family time top priority. Pro Tip: Everyone has to turn off their phones and actually watch the movie! Brew some hot chocolate and haul out those left over and snuggle up in your weighted blanket and zone out with loved ones.
