Christmas Crack Recipe with Pretzels and Toffee
Prep time: 15 mins
Cook time: 5 mins
Total time: 20 mins
Servings: 15-18
Ingredients
4 cups mini pretzels (or substitute saltine crackers)
Nonstick cooking oil spray
1 cup unsalted butter
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup light brown sugar, packed
2 1/4 cups semisweet chocolate chips (or semisweet chocolate, chopped)
1 tsp veg oil or coconut oil
1/3 cup holiday sprinkles
1 Tbsp flaky sea salt (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375 °F. Line a sheet pan with parchment or foil and spray with cooking oil spray. Place pretzels or saltines in a single flat layer.
In a medium heavy-bottom saucepan, combine butter and brown sugar and melt over medium-low heat.
Once the sugar and butter are completely melted, turn the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil. Boil for 3 minutes, stirring only occasionally (about once per minute).
Pour the butter-sugar mixture over the pretzels (or crackers) and spread with a spatula to coat in an even layer. It’s ok if it doesn’t reach all the way to the sides, it will thin out a little in the oven. Transfer the baking sheet to the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes, or until bubbling.
While the pan is in the oven, melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30-second intervals until melted and smooth. Stir in oil.
Spread a layer of melted chocolate over the top of the hot toffee layer.
Add sprinkles and sea salt if using. Let cool completely (about 30 minutes) then transfer to the refrigerator until the chocolate is set.
Cut into individual-sized pieces and store them in the refrigerator. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
Variations
Mini pretzels can be replaced with saltines if you prefer.
