Story
In my writing classes, my professors would stress the importance of a well-rounded plot structure. If you’re unfamiliar with this, the basic plot structure includes introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. I learned that the best stories have plot twists; something that will throw your reader off, because you don’t really want your ending to be super predictable.
In life, we tend to have plot twists pretty often, don’t we? We think something’s going to go one way but a major change happens, and we’re left wondering, “Well where can we go from here? How are things going to turn out now?” As authors of our own stories, even if we don’t know how the ending’s going to unfold, we can take agency and make sure we control what next step occurs.
When things don’t go as planned for you, rewrite the narrative. Change the ending. Take a step back and see things from a new perspective. Where are you going to take your main character next?
